Southdale Road West and Bostwick Road Infrastructure Renewal Project

Southdale Road West is a busy road that transports many Londoners every day. To help provide a safe environment for all road users, the City will be installing wider sidewalks, in-boulevard bike lanes and widening the road from two to four lanes while simultaneously upgrading sewers and watermains underground.

This construction project is consistent with the recommendations of the Southdale Road West and Bostwick Road Environmental Assessment.

The planned improvements to the Southdale Road West and Bostwick Road area is scheduled to start in 2022. Some necessary advance construction work started in mid-January 2021 and is expected to be complete at the end of 2021.

The 2030 Transportation Master Plan prioritized road improvements to Southdale Road West and Bostwick Road to address future growth and accommodate all roadway users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles.

This map above shows the projects limits. In phase one, The City will be reconstructing Southdale Road West from Pine Valley Boulevard to Bostwick Road and Bostwick Road from Southdale Road West to Pack Road. The work

Streetscape elements to be installed include:

  • new curbs and street lighting
  • wider sidewalks
  • in-boulevard bike lanes on the north and south side of Southdale Road West and on the east and west side of Bostwick Road
  • additional through traffic lanes
  • tree removals and replacements

Underground infrastructure work will consist of:

  • upgrading storm sewers, watermains and private drain connections

Advance construction work 

Ahead of this project, the City will complete the following work:

  • tree removals
  • utility relocation

The benefits 

Construction will result in:

  • increased road safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists
  • improved connectivity to adjacent neighbourhoods for the overall road network
  • dedicated turn lanes at signalized intersections that will enhance driver safety and increase capacity
  • reduced traffic delays during peak periods
  • stormwater design improvements

Project Timeline

2021: advance construction work

Necessary work in advance of next year’s construction began in mid-January 2021 and will continue until the end of 2021.

2022: start of construction

Construction is expected to start in 2022 and take approximately one year to complete.
