Wonderland Road Environmental Assessment
Background
Every day, tens of thousands of Londoners use Wonderland Road as a vital north-south corridor to cycle, walk, drive or take transit. Wonderland Road (also known as Highway 4) is a critical transportation corridor for the movement of goods and services through the City. But this essential arterial road has become increasingly congested – a problem that is expected to worsen as London grows, despite significant City investments in road, transit, and cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.
In 2017, the Wonderland Road Environmental Assessment was initiated to consider in greater detail:
- whether Wonderland Road should be widened to six lanes between Southdale and Sarnia Roads
- determine appropriate ways to accommodate pedestrian, cyclist, transit and other users.
Several public engagement sessions were held to share information and gather feedback from the public and stakeholders on issues, opportunities and strategies related to the future of Wonderland Road. Many of these conversations focused on whether road widening projects have a strategic role to play in the future of the City’s transportation network, given the evolving understanding of climate change issues.
Current status
In September 2021, the Wonderland Road Environmental Assessment was suspended at the direction of London City Council after the City completed a screening of current major transportation projects in relation to climate change and the City’s declaration of a Climate Emergency.
The role and function of Wonderland Road will be considered as part of London’s Mobility Master Plan. This plan is currently being developed and it will determine how London prioritizes transportation and mobility infrastructure, programs and policies for the next 25 years. This plan will also include actions to address traffic congestion areas on Wonderland Road with a focus on transit, high occupancy vehicle use and active transportation.
Community consultation is underway for the Mobility Master Plan and you can share your comments and feedback.

The City sent out a notice of commencement to residents, business owners and interested stakeholders to notify them of the Environmental Assessment's start.

Discover Wonderland project team members held pop-up open house events at Westmount Mall, Springbank Gardens Community Centre and Western University, respectively. The focus of these events was to identify problems and opportunities to be addressed in the planning and design process and confirm the need for improvements.
